Hi, I’m planning to assemble a new PC to swap in for my old DDR4 system with a budget just over $2000.
I’m not a hardcore gamer but I like graphics-heavy titles such as Need for Speed, Total War, Age of Empires, and Dirt.
Here’s what I have so far.

I’m flexible on the motherboard, graphics card, RAM, CPU cooler, or SSD, but I’m definitely leaning toward the i7-13700k.

Regarding your selection of the 13700K, I’d simply upgrade to the 14700K. In terms of performance, they’re almost the same, but for an extra twenty dollars it’s better to opt for the newest Intel model. It also includes more cores suitable for different tasks.

For your motherboard, you can achieve comparable results without spending much more. Unless you intend to use the additional features from your Z790 board, a 200 dollar Z690 would suffice. Check out this ASUS ROG Strix Z690-E. It provides ample space for future PCIe upgrades, high IO, and useful BIOS Flashback and CMOS buttons for troubleshooting.

Consider DDR5 memory with reduced latency and higher speed to maximize the 14700K’s potential. You should also consider a 2x16 kit rather than two 2x8 kits. The 2x16 G.Skill Trident Z5 kit will work much better and is much cheaper than buying four separate sticks.

The Crucial P3 Plus SSDs aren’t very fast, but they offer a lot of storage at a low cost. If you need a bit more speed, I’d suggest the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB for your Windows setup, saving the Crucial drive for storing games, programs, or other files.

For your graphics card, a Radeon 7800XT would give better performance than your current 4070 Super. If you chose not to use the Samsung SSD, a 7900XT would fit your budget and outperform the 4070 Super. You mentioned you don’t play many games, but if you want more value for your money, the 7800XT or 7900XT is the better choice.

Thank you for your detailed response. I was planning to replace the 13700k with the 14700k, but the PCPartPicker issued a caution that the BIOS on my machine hasn't been updated to support the 14th generation CPU.

You want DDR5 6000 CL30, not CL40. That and you want 2x16GB or if you feel the need then 2x32GB. This puts you into a better gpu along with a cpu that's easier to tame.

The locked 12 gen i7 vs the unlocked 12 gen i7 is a whopping one frame per second on average. I doubt it's any different with the 13 gen i7's.

The 14700K provides an additional four e-cores, which is beneficial for rendering, though that's the main point.

I have a Be Quiet! Pure Power 12 M 850W as my main power source in this build. I'm looking for RGB RAM and have a 3 Be Quiet Light Wings 120mm PWM High Speed Low Noise Premium ARGB unit, along with two 140mm units from my existing PC that I plan to move over. I need a liquid cooler mounted at the top, two fans on the bottom, and two 120mm fans at the front, all connected to the top of the case.
