Discuss setting up a Minecraft server hosting solution.
I'm trying to set up a local Minecraft server on my PC, possibly using a VPN, without port forwarding. I want only one MAC address to access it so you and your friend can play together. I’m not sure how to do this and don’t find clear instructions online, so I thought sharing my situation would help.
If your friend is playing from home, MAC filtering won't help. It only works on your local network, which isn't ideal unless you're not sure about others on your own system. playit.gg ^ seems like a simple fix. I haven't used it before. For more control without relying on a proxy, Tailscale offers a solid tunneling option that also avoids the need to forward ports. However, it's more complex and needs your friend to install it themselves.
The reason for avoiding port forwarding is that I use Bitdefender VPN, which typically allows you to just open a port. If you're unsure, I can help you figure it out. Any suggestions?
Back then, my friends and I ran servers using LogMeIn Hamachi. It's a free tool that lets you create a VPN for your group, so everyone can join your game server without needing to forward ports. The connection is secured with a login, so just share the credentials and only your friends can access it.
Consider the mesh or gateway network option based on your specific requirements. Which one better suits your needs?
