You can combine your two 10Gb/s network cards into a single DAC for seamless file transfers without a switch. This setup works well for connecting your PC to the server (Windows to ESXi). You'll need to manually set IP addresses and subnet masks, but the process is straightforward.

I'm not super good with networking stuff, but that's okay! Imagine you're explaining it to a five-year-old: you want both servers to have special internet connections. One server needs a 1G connection and the other needs a 10G connection. You just plug their regular connections into a switch, and when they talk to each other, they should use the faster 10G connection.

Based on the assumption the media server runs without a graphical interface, you must identify each network interface and assign a fixed IP via netplan. The tutorial provided offers guidance on this process.

I considered the headless routing option but, being still new to Linux, I thought a polished GUI would be more helpful. Thanks for the guide! When the 10Gbps NICs arrive, I’ll try it out. If that doesn’t work, I’ll settle for purchasing a 10Gbps switch—maybe a Dell PowerConnect 5524 on eBay.

The guide should function even without a headless setup. You can also configure a static IP through the settings interface on the GUI. Also, if you follow this tutorial, it’s a good idea to back up any files you modify, so you have a safe copy in case issues arise.

I believe I need a bit more information before making the purchase. I’m leaning toward the Mellanox MNPA19-XTR Connect X-2 cards. As long as my RAID 6 array reaches around 300-500MB/s, it should work fine. I understand I can install the 10Gbps cards on both the main and backup servers using a DAC cable to connect them, then use their 1Gbps NICs with the switch for internet access and network communication—eliminating the need for a separate 10Gbps switch. However, if I run into routing challenges, I might connect the 10Gbps NICs directly to the Dell 5524 along with all other devices. Regarding cabling, should I purchase four fiber optic SFP+ transceivers for the switch and the 10Gbps NICs, or would it be sufficient to use two DAC cables and link each 10Gbps NIC directly into the switch?

Reduce expenses by moving to a 10 gbE connection. You won’t require additional modules, and certain switches support 10 gbE ports.
