I recently purchased a 3TB hard drive solely for raw files and was seeking top-notch recording tools without overspending. While Fraps and Camtasia work, they each have drawbacks—Fraps can generate very large files, and Camtasia is known for its steep learning curve. I’m looking for reliable, high-quality software that delivers good results without breaking the bank.

Shadowplay appears effective for Nvidia cards. The top free option in my view is Open Broadcast Software—it's free, open source, and packed with useful features. Getting comfortable might take some time, and it doesn’t include an overlay like Fraps (though a plugin might exist). I’ve also heard positive feedback about DXTory, but I haven’t tried the paid version yet.

OBS is consistently a solid option, allowing you to modify and adjust as needed. You can choose QuickSync (Intel iGPU for encoding), GPU Accelerated, or if you have an Nvidia card, NVENC. The performance differences seem quite varied among users; I tested it on my friend's setup and found it to be quite disappointing, though others consider it acceptable. At least give it a shot.

Use a GCN card and install Raptr (formerly AMD Gaming Evolved) alongside VCE MSI Afterburner. Add AMD AMF VCE Bandicam Mirillis Action for enhanced performance.
