On 3GHz it worked, but I assumed a 4.2GHz OC was needed for that speed.

I've paired gtx 1050s with q6600s and they have been alright. So your cpu with something like a gtx 1050 ti at most should be fine. May be a little bottleneck though. Still a very capable rig for everyday use with the right upgrades however in gaming its showing its age
