It's widely recognized, especially on the forum. I'm uncertain but believe everyone includes an Easter egg in the settings—Lollipop even has a Flappy Bird-like feature.
They are also referencing ice cream flavors. Or at least that's what my sister mentioned some time ago.
Most users who work with Android are familiar with the naming conventions being desert names and sweet treats arranged alphabetically. Google even creates statues for each version in offices. There was a video where Android enthusiasts tried to predict the next sweet name. For M, the names I've noticed include Milkshake or Marshmallow.
