A method to halt updates: Windows 10 doesn't let the update service be turned off permanently (you can disable it but it will come back). There are various ways to bring it back, so if you want to stop or manage installations, you can adjust settings in Registry or use a policy that does the same. To switch it off, set your update options to rely on a WSUS server, but don't create one. To switch it on again, either fix the WSUS setting to match your current one or turn off that option entirely. With the settings listed below, you won't be able to search for updates automatically when you click the update button manually, though it won't look for updates in the background. This implies Windows Update is still active but can't download updates on its own. To ensure these changes take effect right away, restart the wuauserv service. You could schedule a script to activate it at a time that suits your needs—say, every 5th of each month with a 2-3 week delay, giving chances to remove problematic updates. Alternatively, you can simply click the update button manually when you remember. We have a centralized system managing timing and it has worked previously; we also have a separate script to handle feature and build upgrades. Updates are disabled by default, but you can configure them as needed.

Just configure every link to use the internet, both wireless and wired, with a metered connection. That’s all it takes.

Windows won't fetch updates quickly on a limited-speed network, meaning you'll receive fewer updates, though it's still enabled
