You might prefer a shortcut because the power button on the monitor can be inconvenient or take too long to access frequently used functions.

I prefer typing on the keyboard, needing just a tap of the spacebar to activate the screen. On MacOS there are quick shortcuts for turning off the monitor, which I find helpful. I plan to create an Auto Hot Key macro, though I’d appreciate a Windows shortcut to close the display.

If your setup supports a connected standby mode, turning off the display puts the system into sleep. If not, you have more freedom. However, this must be done through software—some laptops offer this feature via keyboard shortcuts. Windows provides an API for this action, though it isn’t directly available to users. Depending on how it’s set up, your monitor may need DDC/CI protocol support. Most monitors can handle it, but you can usually disable DDC/CI in the monitor’s settings. You can test the method: GitHub - adrianlungu/ScreenSleep – a tool that simplifies putting screens to sleep.
