They are saved in your public or standard desktop location. Simply select the files you wish to retain on your desktop, and remove the corresponding items from those folders.
Thank you for your patience. The explanation was clear and very useful. I wasn’t able to copy anything, but I managed to transfer all shortcuts from the public desktop into my main user folder. I only realized the shortcuts were in the public folder when you pointed them out. Your help was extremely appreciated.
