Hello everyone, I’m facing a tricky setup issue. My computer needs certain drivers installed, but Windows keeps adding unwanted ones. I’ve read online guides, but nothing seems to help. I’ve tried adjusting Group Policy, editing the registry, and even removing the drivers manually through Device Manager and Control Panel. The problem persists—those unwanted drivers still show up, and even after updating them, they keep reinstalling automatically. I’m looking for a way to stop Windows from downloading core system drivers right after a fresh install. Still, I need them for new hardware like my Dell Latitude, which supports both Windows 10 and 11. Any advice for both operating systems would be appreciated!

You can simply change the installation. Click update drivers and pick the desired one manually.

It might also be possible to turn off Windows updates.

I performed the action by choosing "Update Driver," but it doesn't function precisely as intended, as I described earlier.

Updates must always be available. Windows won't install custom drivers.

Disable automatic driver updates for Windows 10 by blocking the specific driver update, avoiding a full system update since critical patches are included.

@SupaKomputa mentioned the Windows Central piece was among several he tested. It doesn't function properly. The system keeps installing every driver for his laptop. He has 21H2 with OS version 19044.1706.

It seems unusual since your PC doesn’t automatically install the latest driver updates, even though newer versions exist. Are there any background programs running on your laptop? If so, removing them might help.

This is a brand new laptop, as such I have no data on this and have tried so many different methods on multiple fresh Windows 10 and 11 installs. I don't install any programs or anything. It's always the same. I install Windows, apply whichever method with no wifi connected. Then after I follow the articles' instructions I connect to my hone network for the first time, and it will just ignore what I did and continue to download and install ALL drivers anyway.

Once drivers are installed offline, all recognized hardware appears in Device Manager. Unrecognized devices show a yellow warning icon. Once internet access is available, Windows attempts to locate drivers automatically. To avoid this, disable hardware in Device Manager.
