Is there a method to prevent Windows from automatically switching your input/output devices when new peripherals connect? You could check the registry settings or use system properties to keep Voicemeeter as the default.

regrettably, it seems the virtual mixer won't let you adjust audio output as you prefer; using a different method could work better

The virtual mixer is acting as a voice channel, and it keeps changing your connected devices when you insert something.

It seems unlikely because Voicemeeter depends on Windows to send audio to its device, and you could route it differently. If Windows could lock Voicemeeter as static and unchanging, that would be ideal.

For integrated cards, download the necessary drivers—Realtek usually works. The software includes a feature to turn off jack detection.

The connection relies mostly on USB or Bluetooth gadgets.

I notice the answers in this discussion are hard to follow. I own a TV, monitor, speakers, headphones, and a USB headset that all work as input or output. After trying to connect and disconnect them all, nothing changed except when my primary device was removed. Once it was plugged back in, the output switched to it. My chosen setup is 3.5mm speakers and subwoofer with no extra software. I have sound card drivers installed but nothing else. My main question is whether you’ve set your preferred output as the default?

You've configured the desired output device as the default. The problem seems to be with connecting new devices that the system hasn't encountered recently.
