DX12 offers many of the benefits of mantle. There are some exceptions, but overall it makes mantle largely unnecessary. It’s not necessarily superior—it matches mantle—but because it’s widely used, developers have no choice but to use DX12 instead.

I meant what I was saying to a friend was that DX12 matched Mantle well, and AMD wouldn’t have any edge.

Yes, AMD shifted focus away from Mantle to prioritize DX12.

It's great to use DirectX12 since it appears to offer minimal benefits compared to Mantle.

Mantle is mostly removed now. Its task was completed—igniting DX12. Further updates won’t happen, yet the existing release stays. It’s not worth stressing about Mantle these days.
