Hey everyone, I'm really new around here, so please be aware if I mess up anything. I'm having some trouble with Windows Explorer—it's super sluggish, takes forever to load folders, and it crashes every time I close and reopen it. It sometimes freezes completely and only restarts by rebooting. This has been getting worse lately, and now it feels almost impossible to use. I know a fresh install would be the fix, but I'm hesitant because I have a lot of data to deal with and don't want to waste time.

My setup looks like this: CPU is an Intel i7-11700, 32GB RAM at 3600MHz (probably Viper or similar), a 1TB M.2 SSD on the C drive, and an RTX 3060 Ti GPU with an MSI A1000 power supply. I have a few other disks, but they're not related to Windows, so I'm not sure if they need to stay here.

The issue keeps getting worse, and I'm starting to feel frustrated. My taskbar even came back recently, which is odd. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

I would perform a memory stress test to check the stability of the RAM. Even if the issue were with the RAM itself, it’s usually best to reinstall Windows to avoid problems from unstable memory during installation.

I experienced a comparable issue a few months back. If I were to mention it, I'd suggest it's likely not hardware-related. It probably stems from within Windows itself. To fix it, I cleared the explorer in Task Manager (press Ctrl+Shift+Esc), and the problem resolved afterward.

Hey everyone, I realize I’ve restarted it many times in Task Manager, but it’s not functioning anymore. I’ll still attempt a memory stress test later.

Hey everyone, the memory test with memtest86 passed without issues. If you have any suggestions, feel free to share. It seems like a reinstall might be unavoidable right now. Regarding keeping data on accounts or programs, I’m not sure about any reliable methods—maybe starting fresh is the safest option. Thanks for your help, Tom!

Hi everyone, just wanted to express my gratitude for the advice given. Despite my efforts, I still couldn’t figure it out, so I went ahead with the upgrade. From a 1TB important P2 drive, I upgraded to a new P3 2TB and everything is now functioning properly again. Thanks all!
