It's a method allowing your remote workstation to skip additional steps when submitting a print job. Instead of requiring five network hops, it might only need two. This minimizes unnecessary network traffic for data transmission.

I got it—how does it actually work? The print server needs to be linked directly to the printers, and if you want to skip that step, you’d have to find another way to manage printing.

usually you have more in between you and the server and the server is sent the workload and passes it to the printer. With this the information still goes through the print server but it lets you connect directly to the printer. Its like the print server is a toll booth on a toll road. Normally you stop and pay, but some toll roads have like easy passes that just scan you through so you don't stop because you don't need to be stopped any more. The cars are the data packets. Having easy pass is like branch office direct printing. If your packets don't need to stop they move faster and are more reliable. That isn't exactly what is happening but its as close as I can come with an analogy.
