I checked the situation and considered connecting two different types of fans to the 3-way PWM splitter. The setup should work fine as long as the current draw remains within safe limits.

Yes, it will function properly. Dividing the input source generates separate lines for each fan, ensuring each draws the required current.

So would each fan rotate in proportion to the current it receives? If it got full power, would both spin at their individual maximum speeds or could the 120mm fan become overloaded and fail?

So would each fan spin based on how much current it receives? If it got full power, would both spin at their own maximum speeds or could the 120mm fan overheat and fail? Each should handle its current needs, as long as the voltage stays at 12V. Be aware that devices can burn out from voltage spikes or when connected in a chain with higher voltage to compensate for losses after each part.
