You currently own a 6700k motherboard with 4x4GB RAM and 2400MHz DDR4. It’s a solid upgrade chip, reaching around 4.4GHz at 1.26V. The main issue is the cooler, so you can’t increase the voltage anymore. Selling it could bring in about $170–$200, which would fund a better 3600x board later. This seems like a smart move for future upgrades.

The 3600X or even 3600 will surpass the 6700k, but does it really warrant the investment? I’m not sure. For me, making something upgradeable in the future doesn’t seem worthwhile—better wait until you actually need it.

It would be an improvement without needing to invest significant funds, along with the planned future upgrade.

I decide what works best for me. I moved from a GTX 970 to an RTX 2070 Super, which shows how rarely I upgrade. For me, the time and effort needed to replace everything and then get rid of the old gear would be more important than the cost.

It's worth it if your chip isn't meeting your expectations. Sure, the 6700K is a solid choice overall, and achieving the performance you desire makes it tough to upgrade to something that offers the same experience.

Be wary of offers that promise performance improvements, used components, new purchases, or breaking even. Consider this scenario: a potential buyer seeks guidance on your parts before finalizing the agreement. Will we recommend it as worthwhile, or will we guide them toward a similar project you’ve already planned? If the former, you risk being unable to match the performance gains with the sale’s funds; if the latter, you may struggle to reach that price point.

Securing a solid price for the 6700k makes selling timely, a 3600x/3700x performance is unmatched.
