Hello everyone, I apologize for the possible issues with my English, as it isn't my first language.
Here’s what happened:
I purchased an RTX 3080 in 2020 (model MSI GeForce RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X PLUS 10G OC (LHR).)
Everything functioned perfectly, never exceeding maximum performance, always capped at 80% via Afterburner.
I never mined or pushed it beyond its limits, except for some benchmarks like 3DMark and OCCT.
A year ago, I played Black Desert Online with full graphics settings (1080p) and everything worked smoothly.
I stopped playing for about 30 minutes, then returned. My PC was still on the desktop when I logged back in.
Steam didn’t start immediately.
When I resumed, the game appeared on my screen, but Steam wasn’t running yet.
After a while, my PC shut down when I began Helldivers 2.
Later, when I tried to play a game on Steam (a 3D title), it turned off instantly.
I restarted the PC and ran benchmarks with OCCT – everything was normal, no errors.
OCCT detected the GPU and shut it down right away.
I reinstalled the drivers, but nothing changed.
Whenever the system used 3D processing, it would power off immediately, without any warnings or BSODs – just like a power cut.
I only use my PC for non-3D tasks; no games, no modeling software, just basic 2D work.
Tomorrow I’ll contact a local computer expert and bring the card for a check-up.
What might be wrong? I’m worried about losing my CUDA cores, especially since my PC has always had good cooling and never overheated.
Even with water cooling, it never got hot.
I’ve updated the specs below:
- NVIDIA system info: created 05/29/2025 20:37:32
- App version: 11.0.3.241
- OS: Windows 11 Professionnel, Version 10.0.22631
- DirectX runtime: 12
- Driver: Game Ready Driver - 576.52 (inst May 19, 2025)
- CPU: Intel i7-7700K @ 4.20GHz
- RAM: 16 GB
- Storage: SSD 931.5 GB+4 GB more
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
- Direct3D level: 12_1
- CUDA cores: 8704
- Graphics clock: 1740 MHz
- Memory: 19.00 Gbps, 320-bit interface
- PC turn-off on 3D tasks: instant
- Benchmark results: no errors, everything normal
I’ll send this report to my local tech specialist and ask him to test the card.
What could be causing this? I’m anxious about potential damage.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

There's really just two things I'd suggest doing up front. Make sure the video card is securely in the PCIe slot and disconnect the power cables at video card and PSU end and then reconnect them.
There is a possibility of thermal paste/pad issue, but I wouldn't expect that to be an immediate power down.

I also attempted the second PCIe port but encountered the same issue—the graphics card consistently stays at a maximum of 65-70°C regardless of usage.

I don't encounter any BSODs, no error logs appear, and the PC simply restarts as if nothing occurred.
