My laptop has a few problems that I need to fix so it works again. My computer is an Asus model from 2012 with an older version of UEFI software and a 16GB DDR3 memory. It came with Windows 7 Pro, but now my system only shows the black screen on startup. Even when I plug in an HDMI cable to connect it to an external monitor, that connection is broken too. I tried turning off the battery and unplugging power for thirty seconds, which didn't help. I also downloaded a UEFI update file from the internet, but putting it onto my hard drive did nothing to fix things. I even took out the RAM sticks, and removed the battery completely, yet my computer still won't turn on at all. There are no new scratches or drops, just like before.

Mostly, laptop "CMOS" settings are saved on a chip but not always kept forever. That means they often use a tiny rechargeable battery with very little storage instead of a big primary cell. Think of it this way: the only stuff left behind is just the time and date. If you connect to the internet, Windows can get a new time from somewhere else.

I've learned that besides clocking up the hours and minutes, the memory chip keeps track of the old BIOS and UEFI stuff. Because of that, I took out a lot of those settings to make things work better now.
