Hello, I received an i7 7700k from a friend and replaced it with my previous 6600k. I didn’t experience any cooling problems with the 6600k and followed its recommended temperature setting of 4.2GHz. I used a Corsair H100i GTX cooler. After installing the 7700k, I set it to the suggested 4.95GHz, but Time Spy crashed. I removed that setting and managed to run Time Spy, though my peak temperature reached 96°C. At idle it stays around 40°C, but it occasionally rises to about 70°C, which seems unusual. I assumed a thermal interface issue and changed the liquid metal to Arctic Silver without any improvement. I’m unsure what to do next—any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Reinstall the cooler, apply paste, then lower the voltage and clock speed. If this fails completely, greet INTEL SHIT TIM underneath.

Verify the fan settings, confirm the pump functions, ensure thermal paste is present, and discontinue reliance on OC profiles on the motherboard. Check that voltage levels remain normal.

The recommendation for 4.95GHz came from someone familiar with the 7700K. The voltage being used is likely higher than standard, as these CPUs typically require more power to operate at that frequency.

Similar to what others mentioned, using the same OC profile for both the 7700k and 6700k might explain the differences since they have distinct chips.

Asus includes an internal OC estimator, but I disabled it as far as possible. The BIOS seems a bit unclear, so I’ll verify the voltage levels. Could turning it off affect 30C spikes?

The default overclocking configurations tend to be subpar. Exceeding 4.7 cores per core on a 7700K is challenging, so manual tuning is recommended. You can also enable multicore enhancement (MCE) for a 4.5 boost per core, which will still outperform the 6600K you previously had. Don't forget to contact us for your feedback.

It's not possible to achieve a consistent 4.95GHz from a 7700k. Kaby Lake also faced temperature-related problems. A more practical target would be around 4.7GHz.
