My PC on Windows 11 became very slow. I brought it to a local shop who said I had "viruses" on me. They charged me $195 and installed the free Malwarebytes version, which removed the infection. They advised using MB weekly, but I wasn’t sure how to do that. I believed Windows Defender would help stop the virus.

Many factors contribute to a system coming to a halt. Viruses are a significant cause, especially when caution is lacking regarding visited sites and downloaded files.
= = = =
If Windows Defender fails to detect any problems, using free Malwarebytes offers another layer of protection and security checks.
FYI:
https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download
https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us
Explore the support pages and forums to understand how to run Malwarebytes effectively.
Steer clear of untrustworthy websites and risky downloads.

Commenting on the local store wouldn't be appropriate as I lack specific details.
But if you believe you've been exploited or mistreated, it's important to seek help from nearby resources as needed.

When you take a computer in for repair, you are paying for expertise (and rent, insurance, payroll), not just the fix. I have been using the paid version of MWB since it cost $10 for a lifetime license. The paid version is real time so it can catch stuff immediately. Defender in a great anti-virus (certainly as good as the overpriced and huge overhead Norton and McAfee) but much of the crap you can pick up on the Internet are not technically viruses, but malware, something MWB is especially good at. The paid version is up to about $40 @ years, but they have offers and sales that are usually half that (if you select auto renewal you are not offered discounts, something to consider). The point being is if your computer was "loaded", you would probably benefit from added security.

The phrase "loaded with viruses" seems to match the usual explanation number 23. It's not the first thought when describing a report about "slow performance," but it's definitely possible. If you're upset, contact the store.

Also, regarding your signature: the 'fun build' part is clear. Avoid using mixed RAM as suggested in your message. RAM should always be purchased in sets of compatible modules. Make sure it matches your motherboard and CPU specifications.

I'm cautious when downloading dubious links. It would be wise to upgrade Malwarebytes to a premium version for both computers in my sig. And change this? Please advise. I’m basically just putting things together by myself!
Note "BTW, the 'fun build' in your sig. Avoid mixed RAM as suggested. RAM should always come in matched kits. If you're smart, make sure it matches your motherboard and CPU specifications."

I would advise against this, there is no need to pay for Internet security these days, WIndows Firewall and WIndows Defender are plenty good enough. The free Malwarebytes scanner (which the shop installed) is very good for running a manual scan now and again.
If you are not sure what you're doing when building a new PC I suggest you seek advice. You can't just buy a set of random parts and hope they work together. You need to select parts that will work well together and will not create any bottlenecks. You also need to be sure that you're not wasting money buying parts that you can't make full use of.
Buying RAM in a kit (in a pack) is important. Do not mix different RAM sticks.

Full part list?
For me, the usual would be to clear the drive or swap in a fresh copy of Windows 11—it’d have been more affordable than risking losing everything on the PC. That also helps eliminate any potential viruses and malware.
I personally rely on Avast Antivirus.
And malware bytes
