Did Steam fail to set up a desktop version of my game?
I recently assembled a new rig and transferred the Steam client onto my C drive. I installed Kingdoms of Amalur Re Reckoning on my D drive, and it worked without issues, allowing me to resume from where I left off. Steam usually generates a desktop launch icon for the games I install, but this time it produced a .URL. When I opened the game in the Steam library, the "manage" tab didn’t offer an option to create a desktop icon. I tried accessing the game files and manually sending the .exe file to my desktop. Could you help explain why no icon appeared?
After thorough investigation, I discovered the answer. My Kaspersky antivirus prompted whether I wanted Windows to show file types. I chose to allow it. There is a Steam post mentioning that doing so would make the launch icon appear as a .URL file. When you click it, it prompts for an opening method. Selecting "internet" lets it now identify the file type and display it normally. This unexpected behavior really frustrates me.
