Just purchased a 3700X for $270 USD. Was it a good move before the new Ryzen releases in October, or was I making a smart choice by skipping the software hassle? Upgraded from an i5 4690K for comparison. Need something solid or just want to feel better?

You'll be fine! I got a 3700X for the same price, its a great price and the 3700X isn't suddenly going to be bad

You could have waited, since you might have noticed it approaching but the difference isn't huge. The exact date isn't confirmed yet, and with a newer computer available now, it makes sense to proceed.

Only the 4690K is known, clearly the 3700x will completely defeat it everywhere. Why do you always need to think ahead?

$270 is a great price though. The new one will probably (if history repeats itself) retail at $329. So $270 is actually quite a bit less and quite a good deal

It's not always about finding a cheap option. Personal performance needs often mean we won't choose older models unless we have limited funds—or if the same price delivers better results for our tasks.

Maybe in a month the Ryzen 3000 prices would have gone down like they did for Nvidia 20 series cards, but if you needed a better PC because your old one broke or was not up to the task then I see no fault in going with the available stuff.

The Ryzen 4000 could be out of stock until December, and an 8-core 16-thread CPU might be pricier, which isn’t too big of an issue. If you recently purchased an RTX 2080 Ti, it would be a real disappointment.
