I own an ASUS Z97 motherboard.
Lately I had to take out one of the back plates near the bottom of the case.
I forgot there was a shared USB device still connected, supplying power.
I accidentally removed the back plate, it touched the motherboard close to the bottom left, and my onboard sound stopped working. When I turn on the speakers, strange noises occur.
I have a PCIe sound card that is functioning properly.
It would be great if I could restore the motherboard to good condition.
Did I cause permanent damage?

With the right knowledge and tools, almost anything can be repaired. It seems an analog component might have been affected, but it’s unclear why you were working inside the case while power was active.

It was turned off. However, as mentioned, I had neglected the USB cables that were still attached.

When examining, look for mechanical damage; simply touching anything won't cause electrical issues.

If your external USB device relied on an external brick, it could have been feeding 5V DC back into the USB port on your PC. When you say "switched off," do you mean flipping the mains switch on the back of the ATX power supply to the off position? Or did the PSU get unplugged from the wall outlet? If neither happened, the PSU would have been providing +5VSB power in standby mode, meaning the board remained active. Some boards have red or green LEDs indicating power presence. In either scenario (USB 5V feed or live +5VSB), damaging components could cause lasting harm. If only the audio codec was affected, the damage is minimal. Are you skilled with hot air rework tools and able to identify dead chips? Otherwise, consider hiring a professional—their cost may exceed the value of the board.

It seems I’ve managed to stay ahead of things, but there’s a more significant issue looming ahead. On my computers, I use Windows 10 on one drive and Ubuntu 24.04 on another, thanks to a switch made last year. This setup is secure because my Windows drive won’t be affected after October’s end-of-life. Ubuntu Cinnamon offers strong security and long-term updates, and the Pro version is free too. I had planned to share my USB printer and external hard drive between the two systems if needed. The audio problem reminded me that even though a device is assigned to one machine, current can still pass through to the other. This means a Windows virus or other issues could potentially reach my Ubuntu drive and end up on the Windows drive on the other side if I’m not careful. I’ll need to reconsider my configuration. In the meantime, I’ve turned off the built-in audio in the BIOS—fixing things myself isn’t an option. Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice.
