Hi.
At my workplace, I operate a Windows 10 computer within a domain, and updates are frequently pushed to these machines. Because I handle photos and create drawings there, I rely on the portable version of Gimp from portableapps.com. It has been functioning well for a long time. Last week it also worked without issues.

Until today, opening a 6MB JPG image froze for about five minutes before Gimp became ready again (just some cropping and resizing). This was normal.

Then exporting the file caused another delay—around four minutes before the export window appeared. After that, everything resumed normally.

The same issue occurred with a new image I was about to process. When trying to open the JPG, the GUI froze again. Eventually, after checking Task Manager, I terminated the Gimp process (the interface stopped freezing).

Since this happened three times, I decided to end the Gimp process using Task Manager.

My first guess is that some settings in Gimp might be causing this problem. I visited the portableapps website and downloaded the latest version of Gimp. I cleared all files in the recent portableapps folder (including binaries and settings) and unpacked the new version into that directory.

The outcome was worse: I let it attempt to open a file for over ten minutes, but had to end the process again. This didn’t resolve the issue.

What’s puzzling is that this behavior changed during the weekend (it wasn’t an issue last week). I suspect a Windows update might be responsible, though I can’t control it.

I hope this is just a Windows cache problem and gets fixed tomorrow. Anyone else have encountered this with Gimp on Windows 10? Any suggestions?

I figured out when and why this occurs. It turns out Gimp doesn't accept JPG files from my Sony RX100 camera. The reason it's happening now instead of before is that I used to optimize those JPG files during import by running a batch operation with Irfanview. This time, I didn't run the optimization routine. Problem solved, or at least I have a workaround now 🆒. I'm planning to file a bug report since I can reproduce the issue 😎
