Hello everyone. I'm currently dealing with a DOA Ryzen 5 CPU from a build I'm doing with my friend. Over the years I've built several machines, so I wanted to share this experience with you all. I purchased various components recently because it took some time to find better deals. Instead of replacing the CPU, I bought a used Ryzen 5 3600X on eBay in March. The seller gave great feedback and said the chip was still functional, mentioning they were moving to a newer series. It seemed like a smart choice since other parts were getting more expensive. When I got the chip, it looked fine except for a tiny residue around the heat spreader. I showed my friend the basics of assembly, and once everything was set up, it booted but only loaded into the boot drive I had installed Windows on. It would power off and restart every time I tried to install the OS. After several hours of troubleshooting, we discovered the issue: the CPU was dead, even though it appeared in the BIOS and the system started normally. It wouldn't boot to the Windows installation drive. Only when I swapped it with a Ryzen 7 3700X on the motherboard did it stop looping and allow us to complete the setup. Now I'm really puzzled—there were no bent pins, just old residue and unclear signs of damage. I'm unsure what caused the failure or how to fix it. Eventually, we replaced it with a new Ryzen 5 3600X, and it worked perfectly. My friend is happy now, but I'm left with a dead CPU that I can't sell or use, which feels frustrating. Karma is available for sale with some residue. It's suitable for still and used items on EBay, especially during the chip shortage. You might earn a good amount right now!
It's disappointing we paid $150 upfront, thinking it was a fair price back then. Since the build started only a few weeks ago, eBay won't help me get my money back. I worry AMD might not accept an RMA because the CPU was used before and wasn’t in the original box. I might have gotten it new, but since it was for a friend, I hoped a used one could still function. Thanks for your reply. If I can still request it, I’ll try; otherwise, it might become a collectible as PCs keep improving.
