I'm trying to understand why my PC won't boot properly with XMP enabled on my Gigabyte Z590 board. It worked well for a couple of weeks before it refused to start. After checking standard RAM modules, I turned off XMP and managed to boot at full 128GB speed with 2132.82MHz. Now, when I enable XMP again, the speeds jump to 5100MHz depending on the RAM configuration. It seems like XMP is interfering with something. The system still runs fine without it, so it's not a major hardware issue. It scored decently in Cinebench and 3D MARK, which suggests the GPU side is okay. I suspect there might be a compatibility or driver problem. I'd appreciate any advice on what I might be missing.
4x32 GB often struggles to boot above baseline, typically ranging from 2133 to 2666 for DDR4. Using two dimms can still provide solid performance, though speeds drop significantly with four. I’d be shocked if the RAM stayed stable at 5100, since most DDR4 models face many problems beyond 3800 without extensive adjustments.
More RAM, more problems. The more memory in a system, specifically the more memory ranks in a system, the lower the max RAM speed ends up. 128GB will result in quad rank memory effectively, the most that can be on a consumer platform, and speeds above 3200MT/s are hit or miss without quite a lot of work. You might be able to get it to work by messing with the system agent voltage and VCCIO2, though you can't expect XMP to just work on a system like this. Also, I have my doubts of these memory sticks all being the same. There's a couple different memory ICs that could exist in these kits, and companies like Corsair will swap between them depending on what was on hand, so if these kits weren't bought at the same time, they possibly aren't the same and will have compatibility issues with each other. Also why do you have two GPUs in this system?
You’re connecting multiple monitors with your new setup, which is great for multitasking. Having dual GPUs isn’t inherently problematic—just ensure your system supports the workload. The fact that you’re using six monitors makes it simple to manage them. No issues expected from this configuration.
