Diagnose X99 build issues
Over the past month I've been trying to understand what's going wrong with my computer. One day I was working from home and shut it down after work. The next morning it would crash violently with a kernel panic on Linux, even though there were no updates since the last boot. This is unusual for me. I tried using Windows (on a different drive and partition) but it also failed to boot. I've done several things: cleared all memory modules, used just one module in the recommended slot, replaced the CPU and reinserted it, attempted booting from USB, removed the backup battery, detached the GPU, changed the power supply, and reset the BIOS. Each time I tried, it would either fail to start or crash hard. The system runs well at temperatures under 60°C thanks to its custom watercooling, but it still won't boot. I'm confused and don't know what to do next. I'm considering buying a cheaper Xeon to avoid using the CPU, but I'm not optimistic.
It seems the CPU was the issue. I swapped in the 5960X for a more affordable Xeon (2680-V4) and everything is running smoothly. Started immediately without any problems. Probably time to look for something similar like a 6950X at a good price, which would also be a great upgrade later. 😊
