People are curious about why Xfinity limits their WAN DHCP lease to under two hours. This seems confusing since your connection issues persist, and the chatbot doesn’t provide assistance. The forum post you mentioned is marked private, but you can’t modify its visibility, which might explain why it wasn’t seen.

Typically this happens because there isn’t enough IP space available to keep it running normally, so they can reclaim unused IPs quickly before running out completely. This is managed by the Xfinity DHCP server and not by your modem. These adjustments apply to all subscribers, not just you. In my observations, the DHCP lease process usually works smoothly without affecting customers. I’ve set it as short as 5 minutes due to space concerns and never noticed any disruption. Keep in mind this is based on my personal experience managing DHCP servers for ISPs.

I’m likely familiar with this situation. It seems like they’re likely performing maintenance or upgrades nearby. They maintain a direct forum on DSLreports.com, possibly sharing updates there. Since the post is visible only to Comcast staff, they might offer more helpful information. However, note that the WAN IP is managed by their DHCP server, not the modem, so you can’t change it yourself.

But it would be disappointing if they had only been working on maintenance for nearly two years.

Here’s what you observe on your end with your Xfinity service after logging in to the interface.

Each IP scope comes with its own lease timers, meaning yours might use the default setting. IP Scopes are typically installed on a cable bundle within a CMTS for particular areas, which can affect how much IP capacity each receives compared to others. Numerous elements influence the allocation of IP space and the chosen CIDR size.

The OP is referring to the WAN side, not the local/LAN side.

A brief rental period shouldn't lead to declines, unless it constantly shifts and reassigns resources every couple of hours—a scenario that seems completely absurd.

They regularly perform maintenance, which is part of their role. They're currently involved in Midsplit and Docsis 4.0 updates. Is the problem related to the lease duration, or could there be a deeper signal issue?

It's been a while since I've been here, but we managed to resolve it. It required some trial and error, but eventually they settled on a three-day lease period. They addressed the issue in mid-November last year. The recurring problem is that it keeps happening again! In the past couple of weeks, my lease duration has been between one and three hours. I've seen many similar posts on the Xfinity forum this year, and most agree it's a server-side setting they can adjust—but only if you bring it up.
