Device wouldn't restart after adding a new GPU – Fix: Restart Windows Mixed Reality Portal reinstallation
In short, I replaced my graphics card and soon my computer wouldn’t power up from sleep often. It still woke up, but the screen wouldn’t connect. When trying to link my Bluetooth speaker, no signal was detected, indicating a complete disconnect rather than just a connection issue. I suspected driver problems, overclocking, or BIOS settings causing a crash. DDU and other tools didn’t help. After three weeks of troubleshooting, I noticed the Desktop Window Manager would freeze before crashes appeared in Task Manager. Previously, connecting my HP Reverb G2 via USB required unplugging and replugging. Once the new graphics card was installed, it worked smoothly without needing those steps. The freeze likely relates to the change. After reinstalling Windows Mixed Reality Portal, the issue stopped completely—at least my computer didn’t crash overnight for the first time. I’ll update if the problem returns.
The issue persists despite receiving some data. The screen remains connected, but restarts and blue screens continue. This time the error message displayed was the blue screen code: 133 graphics card driver. It seems a newer Nvidia driver might be available, so I’m replacing the old one with the new one. I haven’t applied any firmware updates for this 3070, which could be the cause. I’m hesitant to proceed with an update since Precision x won’t allow it without a firmware upgrade, so I’m using MSI Afterburner instead to adjust my fan settings.
Visit C:\Windows\Minidump and verify the presence of any minidump files. If found, return to the Windows directory and transfer the entire Minidump folder to the Downloads folder (use your desktop if OneDrive isn't available). Compress the copied folder and include it in a post. Please adhere strictly to the guidelines provided by Windows.
I don't share minidumps due to security rules. Still, thanks! I believe the Graphics Card driver resolved the issue somehow. Hope so. Otherwise, keeping the HP reverb disconnected when not in use would help. I'm checking that now too. This time I unplugged the HP Reverb while using DDU and installing the driver just in case it caused trouble. My system is much quieter when idle. We'll see if the problems return later when I try leaving the Reverb plugged in again. I'll note the fix once I figure it out, even if I have to do it myself.
The issue resurfaced once I unplugged the HP reverb and after playing DCS, suggesting the cable might still be connected.
It’s happened again with the HP Reverb unplugged and the TV displaying "mode not supported." When I tried to turn it on, nothing worked. I plugged it back in and restarted, but it came back. I’m trying a different setting—switching to 1440p at 120hz instead of 4K at 120hz. After installing the new GPU, the Nvidea control panel now shows 4K at 60hz with 1440p at 120hz. If I keep that configuration, maybe it will stop this issue.
I ran an sfc /scannow using PowerShell and corrected several damaged files. During the update process, Windows encountered issues that might have affected dwm.exe.
Nothing seems to be resolving it. That Nvidea thing is frustrating. I've done everything possible. When I briefly shut down the monitor, the fans spin fast and turning the TV back on doesn't get the screen to turn on. The reliability log records DWM.exe crashing repeatedly each time this occurs. Only when the monitor finally comes back on does the Nvidea driver appear. I'm really upset with the 3070 so far—it's a terrible experience. I might need to update the firmware, but I'm nervous about doing that while the system keeps crashing. This is such an annoying issue.
Okay, .I uninstalled afterburner. .Tried to let Precision X1 install the latest VBIOS. .It told me to disable the CSM (Compatibility support module) in the bios first so I did that. .Installed the latest VBIOS. .Still had DWM (desktop window manager) crashing in the reliability history, but the screen is coming back every time now. .I used DDU in safe mode. .Installed the latest Nvidia driver again and I think it’s good now, but I’m probably jinxing it. marking it as solved for now.. hoping this ordeal is over
