Device unexpectedly shuts down during web activity or file transfers using torrents.
Hey there. I checked the forum and online resources, but didn’t find a fix. Over the past couple of years, my computer would suddenly stop working, especially when I was watching YouTube videos or downloading files via torrent. It only happened occasionally, so it wasn’t a major concern. Recently, it started freezing whenever I opened any browser. I saw some suggestions online that it might be related to my SSD, but it still freezes even after disconnecting the SSD and using a different HDD. Gaming didn’t affect it, regardless of how demanding the game was. File copying worked normally, and I didn’t notice any BSODs, CPU or RAM spikes. The issue is that the mouse or keyboard won’t respond, and it doesn’t unfreeze even after leaving it on overnight.
I’ve tried several things: reinstalling Windows (clean install), switching to a different hard drive, re-seating RAM, updating drivers, reseating everything by reassembling the PC, removing the SSD or HDD completely to rule them out, running a scan with ResMon and Malwarebytes, and toggling the system on and off again.
Here are my specs:
- CPU: Core i3 (2130? I’m guessing)
- GPU: Overclocked cooler master PSU
- RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB 4GB x 2
- Video card: Nvidia GTX 650
- SSD: 120GB Kingston 300 series (system)
- HDD: WD Green 1TB (system test)
- Everything functions well in safe mode with network drivers.
No issues have occurred so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve attached a photo of ResMon when it froze.
I explained that stability remains consistent across all platforms, yet issues appear exclusively in browsers. When I mention a crash, I mean system blue screens or error messages like "Chrome.exe has stopped working." It doesn’t necessarily involve the PC shutting down completely but can include specific alerts or failures.
I feel a chill when: Using torrent downloads or Steam games. Other programs like Blender, Lightroom, Photoshop work fine. Freezing occurs—mouse and keyboard stop working. On YouTube videos, visuals and audio freeze with a buzzing sound. No solution other than pressing the reset button.
The system remains operational. The screens and controls become unresponsive, all data stops responding. The hardware is quite outdated. I built the machine roughly four to five years back. It has accumulated about 11 thousand hours of idle time. The initial freezes started about two years prior.
I ran a memory test and everything looks good. Still confused—have been working on it for two months now.
