Device toggling its own power state repeatedly
Hi everyone, I have a friend who just upgraded his computer. He’s experiencing the issue where the PC shuts off and restarts repeatedly. I’ve been trying to point out that it’s likely related to his power supply, even though he chose the cheapest option available. Despite my warnings, he still blames the motherboard and RAM—both new purchases. His PSU is a Thermaltac LitePower 650W (used), an 80+ white model. I’ve encountered similar problems before using older PSUs on OEM builds. I’ve advised him to upgrade to a better PSU and monitor if the issue continues. His system specs include an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 with a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB 3200MHz, a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB, and an Asus Prime B450M-A motherboard. He thinks the Thermaltac LitePower 650W might be the culprit. Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks ahead!
Purchasing a used PSU is absolutely not advisable, especially if it's inexpensive. He should get a new PSU before it fails and causes further damage to other parts.
@AbdulRehmaann and @InfernalClaw have the right point. I recently received a used PSU from a friend. It functioned okay at first, but was outdated and of lower quality. A fellow friend was experiencing problems with his new GPU, so he asked me to test it on his system. I did, and everything seemed normal until the GPU hit full power. Suddenly my PC shut down without any warning or error—just stopped completely. I tried restarting by pressing the power button, but nothing happened. Eventually I unplugged it and removed the GPU. When I reached back into the case, sparks flew, followed by loud crackling and a burning smell. I realized my setup was severely damaged, possibly ruining his expensive GPU. Luckily, only the PSU was destroyed; everything else survived. The lesson is clear: avoid making similar mistakes—this could ruin your gear.
