Yesterday afternoon my computer began freezing while I navigated websites or launched new apps. For instance, clicking the start menu caused it to freeze. When using Steam, it would also lock up. Switching to the Steam library page led to a similar issue. My only suspicion so far is that the GPU was overloading, showing high usage at 20%, 60%, or even 100%. It gets more confusing—my system runs intense games smoothly but acts this way otherwise. I tried reinstalling the GPU driver, and it worked until recently when the problem returned. Anyone know what could be causing this?

It's a rather unusual problem, but I recommend turning off hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Adjust it via the right-click area on your desktop, navigate to display settings, scroll down, and locate "Graphics Settings" to disable the feature.

That didn’t resolve the problem. Trying to restart again didn’t help. However, updating the GPU driver once fixed it. I’m still puzzled about why or how this would work or why the issue came back after a reboot.

Maybe the driver was misused and you should reinstall it or check for compatibility issues. It's best not to alter drivers if everything functions correctly. Use DDU in safe mode to eliminate problematic drivers. Restore from the factory setting.

Attempted using ddu for a fresh installation, but the problem reappears intermittently. Tried another driver version before, though it also fails when almost all system components are closed or shut down. Rebooting helps only briefly, which doesn’t make much sense.

It turned out the GPU failed. I managed to realize the graphics card was the issue, not the whole system. It stopped working with the display while gaming and kept freezing otherwise. I don’t understand why it only happened in certain situations or why clearing the drivers helped.
