Operating on 5950x with 3600 Ballistix memory, 6800 XT, and 860W ION+ power supply. Used PBO mode during the colder months, but today it got quite warm—92°F outside. To maintain a comfortable room temperature, I switched to ECO mode. After launching a game, it crashed after about 45 minutes, shutting down completely when the menu loaded. Once back up, I tried CPU and GPU stress tests, then stopped everything. The screen went black and the machine reset. Before this issue, temperatures stayed in the 70s or lower. I attempted a BIOS reset and reconfigured settings to identify a possible cause.
ECO mode adjusts the CPU voltage when running at slower clock speeds. This can lead to instability at those lower speeds, particularly during high demand, whereas faster speeds stay consistent. The issues resemble those seen with a simple under-voltage regulator.
It lowers the TDP to 87 watts while maintaining voltage. Power consumption is reduced by adjusting clock speeds, but performance clocks are cut to control draw. I used a curve optimizer to decrease CPU cores by 10%, then reset settings from xmp and fclock, switched to eco mode, and re-applied offsets after testing each change. Stock BIOS settings showed 86°C at full load with eco on, now it's 73°C under those adjustments.
