I've been using this forum for troubleshooting for years, yet I'm still stuck without going online to search. My computer is solid: a GIGABYTE B550 AORUS ELITE Ryzen 7 5700G with 32GB RAM, 500GB NVMe SSD, and a 4TB HDD for bulk storage. Around the time of this writing, when playing Quake 2 RTX or Power Wash Simulator, my keyboard and mouse freeze and lag heavily—only a second or two between each interruption. I'm maintaining a high PFS of 60 throughout, yet the character keeps moving in an unintended direction, as if it remembered the last action. I use a wireless mouse and keyboard, which function perfectly in lower-end titles like BL3, but fail in these specific games. The issue started recently when I upgraded my motherboard, CPU, and doubled my RAM to the same configuration listed above. I updated my BIOS to version 15a, enabled/disabled VSync, tried low-latency settings via Nvidia Control Panel, and adjusted graphics options. Please assist!
The keyboards and mice are several years old. The batteries haven’t been replaced recently. The receiver placement hasn’t changed much. At work, we use wireless keyboards, and when they malfunction it often means the batteries are low. In a home setting this might not apply, but it’s worth noting. I believe this could be a valid reason to switch to a wired setup.
The keyboard/mouse pair is a festive gift and the batteries are still in good shape. I believe this scenario could occur beyond just PWS or Quake 2 RTX—wired setups are also common. I’m considering wired choices but haven’t found a reliable option that balances price and performance. Previously, I used some discarded office equipment from work.
Mouse was knocked over, yet my wired keyboard remains functional. Since the wireless keyboard is off and the wireless mouse is still connected, the system continues to operate. The keyboard still shows delays, suggesting the problem isn’t with the wireless setup.
At this point I have two lines of thought. Either... A: Something is eating up way too much system resources to the point that you are seeing input lag and general unresponsiveness even if the the FPS of the games don't specifically drop for one reason or another. Opening up task manager and just watching what is eating up either memory or hitting the hard drives when these lags hit. Since they don't last long it could be some back ground process that is suddenly soaking up everything then letting go once done. B: Moving up the chain from the keyboard/mouse is how they connect. Perhaps this could be a sign of bad USB ports on the Motherboard or on the front I/O so switching ports around and waiting for these lags to occur might help diagnose this. Of the two I am starting to lean a bit more in the direction of A. At first when I saw that you had 32GB of memory to play with I thought it unlikely that memory starvation (one of the most common reasons for lag I personally see) is a issue but if something like a anti-virus or some other background program is trying to hit the drive that is playing the game for example then there is no left over bandwidth for input commands until it works through whatever is clogging up the works. If you can quote me on replies I am better able to respond to offer what further help I can but I won't lie I too am increasingly stumped.
I actually attempted task manager and GeForce Experience Advanced to investigate. My HDD isn’t being affected, RAM utilization stays below 50%, and temperatures remain low, around 60°C or less. It’s reassuring that we approached this issue together, which helps ease the frustration. This has really puzzled me, but I’m confident I’ll figure it out now. I tried changing ports, and in doing so, recalled a previous fix. I had an extension for my wireless keyboard and mouse because of signal problems from nearby ports. I initially thought removing the cable would help, but I was mistaken. I’ve taken it out and moved it to the bottom of my cable box, ensuring it won’t interfere with others. I appreciate your assistance—without this guidance, I wouldn’t have remembered that detail. If anyone else encounters similar problems, I hope they learn from my experience.
