Today my computer stopped working during a game. After restarting, I powered down the power supply and held the power button until it came back on. I noticed sparks and a burning odor. I disassembled the PC but didn’t find where the sparking occurred. The smell appeared inside the PSU. I own a 9700k in a Z390 two weeks ago, upgrading from a 1060 6G. My current PSU is a Dark Power Pro 11 750W. I used an old Corsair CX550 which works fine—it only has an 8-pin CPU connector, while my board supports more. Attempts: I connected the old PSU to the motherboard and tried turning it on. Some lights flickered briefly when switching the PSU on, but the system didn’t activate. I also tried connecting the PSU directly to the board, checking the PS-on pin, which clicked like a normal boot. I don’t have a multimeter right now. My CPU and board are still intact, but I’m unsure if the PSU is the issue. Could it be the motherboard or CPU? Or is the PSU the culprit? Since the PSU is under warranty, I might return it for replacement. If it fails, will other parts be replaced? Any advice on further steps or overlooked factors? Thanks.
Avoid testing the PSU on your new setup to prevent damage; it’s no longer functional and unreliable. If you have a working PSU on an older system, remove the graphics card and run a bareboard test using the original supply and integrated graphics to check performance. If the board or CPU is faulty, return it for replacement.
They seem to have failed, possibly due to damage. I’ll reach out to the seller for an RMA of the power supply in Europe. I’m curious how they’ll respond about any issues with the motherboard or CPU. Thanks.
