Tried upgrading from Ryzen 5 3600 to Ryzen 7 5800x. After installation, the system refused to boot. I reinstalled the old CPU thinking the PSU wasn’t powerful enough, but now it won’t start unless I place RAM sticks in slots A1 and B1. Anyone know what’s happening? This is my first AMD build—no experience with all the details. Everything looks fine, pins are intact.
It might be related to the outdated motherboard BIOS, but you're sure it's not the issue?
What happened is the board tried to change settings to run the new chip but because it's probrably not supported by the current BIOS it didn't boot. Then you tried to go back and that didn't work either due to the changes it did trying to work the new chip. To use the new chip you'll need to update the BIOS - No way around it. The manufacturer's website has the BIOS and steps on how to do the flash and it's easy to do - Almost automatic in fact. Just get the newest BIOS file and do it. To start using the old chip again you'll need to reset the BIOS via clearing CMOS, usually you can just pop the battery out for about a minute, pop it back in and it should work. Note that anytime CMOS is cleared any settings you had are reset to factory defaults, including your system clock.

It shows "No image on Drive" even though I'm using BIOS 2.60 for my ASRock B450M Steel. I purchased an extra 8GB flash drive to install the BIOS update, but the issue persists. Could there be a problem with my motherboard? Updated October 4, 2022 by Matt_A needed to update.
