I believe you got the idea wrong. The SATA connector that connects to the motherboard functions properly because SATA power is compatible with RGB systems.

I swapped out my PSU and kept the Corsair PSU's SATA cable but connected it to an EVGA one, which caused it to fail.

Absolutely, always keep the other power cables away and stick to the one included with the PSU.

100% during PSU swaps I don't even open the new box until I've unplugged all the old cables. Have you tried placing the drive in another tower? Also, use a different SATA cable since they can sometimes detach from certain drives. Honestly, my thought is the bad drive.

Absolutely, after watching that video of Linus explaining how PSU manufacturers differ in pin layouts, I’ve switched from those.

It hasn't stopped working since it was tested when purchased. I'll try connecting it to a different SATA port to check if that works.
