Yesterday my brothers' PC suddenly went black and stopped responding. After turning it back on, it wouldn't POST and the VGA debug light was lit while no GPU output appeared. Details about the hardware: Ryzen 5 2600X, MSI B450 TOMAHAWK RTX 3070, Corsair RM750X, PSU with 4x8GB Corsair 3200 MT/s RAM. I've tried several fixes: swapped GPU to another slot and a different one, cleared CMOS, removed RAM in pairs, checked the PSU with a cheap tester (it showed all rails good), flashed BIOS with Flashback, and reinserted the CPU (though it was PGA, so that's unlikely). I also thought about reseating the CPU. Based on what I've seen, it might be the CPU or motherboard issue. Before taking it apart further, could you suggest any other possibilities? Oh well, I didn’t realize it before I tried the first two sticks, checked them out, failed, then swapped in the other two and ran the test again. This time the RAM indicator lit up as expected, and I put all four back in to see the VGA light.
I’d assume the motherboard is failing, but swapping the GPU into another tower could help verify its functionality.
I added the second GPU to check its performance. It seems to be working fine, though I suspect a failing memory module might cause issues. The system isn’t recognizing the GPU in either the CPU or the PCIe slots, which could lead to boot problems.
It seems the previous GPU didn't work with the new GPU setup. I suspect the motherboard might be faulty or the PCIe controller failed. As mentioned earlier, if you have another PC to test, it would be wise to check. It might be necessary to replace the motherboard after this.
I experienced the same issue before. Contrary to expectations, the CPU was actually the cause. Swapping it brought the system back online. Still unclear about the reason.
