Device fails to show after installation, assistance needed
I began this project about a month ago, and it has kept failing repeatedly. Right after everything arrived, once the setup was complete, the motherboard lit up with a white VGA indicator. When I brought it to a nearby repair service, they found the GPU was defective and sent it back for replacement. Once it came back, the same issue persisted. I took it to another shop, which also reported the motherboard was bad and returned it. After several weeks, I finally got the new motherboard and had it installed. They confirmed everything worked properly, installed Windows 11 Pro, and sent it back.
Now I’m home, connected the keyboard and mouse, hooked up the HDMI to the GPU and monitor, and turned it on. The system started without any error lights, so I powered it off because I left the Wi-Fi adapter from the motherboard in another place. Later, I picked it up, plugged the Wi-Fi adapter back in before turning it on. The PC booted up normally, but instead of showing a signal on the screen, it displayed a black screen that would flicker briefly. I tried restarting, unplugging everything, and nothing happened—just no error lights and a black screen.
I attempted to clear the CMOS by using the motherboard’s clearCMOS button, but now the green LED lit up, indicating issues with the boot drive. I’m considering sending it back to the shop, but I don’t have any tools to test individual components. The BIOS is already updated to the latest version.
I’m running out of options since replacements took too long and the 30-day return window at Newegg has expired. The build cost a lot, and I’m starting to think it might not work anymore. Here are my specs:
- Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X670E-F Gaming WIFI GPU
- CPU: MSI Gaming x Trio GeForce RX 4090
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
- Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 TT Premium 1650W (80+ Gold)
- RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5-6000 CL30
- Case: Meshify 2 XL ATX Full Tower
- Storage: Corsair MP600 2TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVMe
- Additional: Seagate IronWolf Pro 8TB 3.5” 7200 RPM HDD
I’m hoping to return it for repair, but I’m unsure what else I can do. Please advise—I’m exhausted and don’t want to give up now.
Removing all storage devices ensures your motherboard won’t attempt to boot from a non-OS disk. You should still receive GPU functionality and be able to access BIOS settings. Everything functions normally without an OS disk connected. This brings you back to the fundamentals. If video output appears and you can enter BIOS without issues, you can reinstall your OS disk. Configure it properly in BIOS as the primary boot device and verify operation. Once that’s set, you can add other non-boot drives. When problems arise, you can further troubleshoot. *Note: I’ve had bad experiences with repair shops. They often rush through the process without thoroughly checking components. As you’ve observed, many issues are avoidable if you try yourself.*
You've resolved the CMOS issue and reinstalled Windows, but the problem persists—screen appears blank after shutdown. It looks like clearing the CMOS fixed the display, yet the system fails to load properly. Since the GPU works fine, the issue likely lies elsewhere, such as a corrupted bootloader or hardware fault. Consider checking the power cycle process, testing with another USB port, or consulting Windows support for deeper diagnostics.
