Device fails to power off due to technical issues.
I attempt to power off the system via the start menu, but it fails to shut down completely. The display turns off while fans and LEDs remain active. Pressing the power button on the case also doesn’t result in a proper shutdown; I must keep pressing it and force close the system. Restarting the computer takes 3 to 5 minutes to resume. If it enters sleep mode, it won’t wake up with a button press or mouse movement. I suspect the issue began after updating the BIOS. I’ve searched online for typical solutions but none have resolved it. I tried using Quick Shutdown, which was recommended, but it didn’t work. Running a CMD scan for corrupt files helped, though the Windows Troubleshooter didn’t fix it. I’ve adjusted several BIOS settings without success. My system runs Windows 10 with ASRock B550 PG Velocita BIOS, featuring an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 GPU, 2GB RAM. I submitted a support ticket to ASRock for assistance but am seeking advice from others. This problem has persisted since I recently built the machine and updated the BIOS through the ASRock app.
I’d consider disabling the quick startup if you haven’t done so already. Not sure if that’s what you intended by “fast shutdown.”
Along with what @TylerD321 noted, I've discovered Ryzen and compatible boards tend to be sensitive to RAM (I usually stick to the board's QVL), and I've also noticed Win10 sleep mode can create problems. My 5900X/B550 system performed poorly with the first RAM I tried, despite fixing 99.99% of my issues. A few small hiccups remained until I turned off Windows sleep mode. I’ve done a lot of research on everything I built for the rig, so I don’t think it’s the RAM issue. I can verify it myself. I also have another computer with the same MOBO and CPU, which has worked perfectly before, so I’ll give it a shot.
I switched to the RAM from my previous build that matches the MOBO, had similar CPU specs, but it didn’t resolve the problem.
It actually powers off after roughly 10 minutes if you wait. You need to disable fast startup, adjust plan settings at power, change advanced options, and turn off hybrid sleep. This happened before, but the fix wasn’t solid. If it doesn’t work, reinstall Windows and back up your data to an external drive.
ASRock contacted me with a link to a PDF. From what I gather, there’s a default setting on ASRock MOBOs that keeps USB power on certain ports active. Disabling it resolves the problem, or vice versa. The BIOS lists it as disabled, but a forum mentioned it was enabled by default. Adjusting the “Deep sleep” setting in the ACPI configuration to “Enabled in S5” fixed the issue. This should assist others in the future.
