I’m sorry if this is posted in the incorrect forum; I’m not entirely sure which one would be best for this situation. Essentially, I have a rather unusual and bothersome problem that I’m struggling to fix. My JBL Charge Essential Bluetooth speaker is linked only to my iPhone 12 Pro Max for listening to music via Spotify. It appears on the phone but never shows up in the computer’s list of available Bluetooth devices or connected BT devices.

What makes this more confusing is a specific behavior: whenever audio plays on the laptop—whether from YouTube or notifications—it automatically plays through the speaker, which is only connected to my phone. This happens even when I disconnect everything and try to pair the speaker manually. Even with the Bluetooth turned off on the laptop, the issue persists.

When I disable Bluetooth entirely on the laptop, the problem still occurs, though I disconnect my phone from Wi-Fi to prevent network conflicts. The wireless headset remains set as the default output on the laptop, and it still sends audio to the speaker. Normally, connecting the speaker to another source produces a sound, confirming a proper connection. However, with this malfunction, no signals appear, and there are no notifications or alerts from the speaker.

It feels like the laptop is somehow taking over the speaker’s role at all times, switching seamlessly between devices without any indication of what’s connected. This shouldn’t be happening, especially since I can still pair and disconnect normally. The situation is frustrating, particularly because it keeps happening even when I’m not using Bluetooth.

Anyone have a clue about what might be causing this? Why does the laptop seem to override the speaker when they’re not paired? I’ve tried restarting both devices and checking the sound settings in Windows 10, but nothing seems to help. The issue started today after a recent update, and I haven’t received any new software releases.

Take the wireless headset away from your PC. Make sure there’s no connection method left (like USB removal if needed). This could happen because band sharing is occurring and two devices are trying to use the same frequency.

Wow, that worked! I took out the USB adapter from the laptop and the issue disappeared, but when I put it back in, it came back again. It’s strange since I’ve used the same headset with the adapter in the same port for a long time, along with the speakers, and never had this problem before. Thanks again! The problem is fixed.

Attempt a reconnection process to have the headset recognize the dongle once more. This often moves it to a different frequency band. Ensure the Bluetooth device is powered on and actively transmitting so it appears occupied.

After adjusting the software for the headset (something I might have done earlier but forgot), I realized the speaker was linking to the headset USB dongle by accident, which likely caused interference. Since the headset was set as the default output, it made sense that the laptop sound came through the speaker. The dongle seemed designed only for the headset and wouldn't work with other devices, so I changed the connection method and turned off auto-connection to new devices. Now everything appears to function properly.

It's a wireless headset, likely using standard Wi-Fi adapters or Bluetooth dongles.

It’s a Jabra Evolve 75 paired with the Jabra Link 370 dongle. I think what you mentioned is likely accurate.

Hahaha it's great to be on Jabra. They actually use dongles that match any headset, and they sync frequencies to whatever device you connect them to. Interesting how Jabra works with similar audio gear through autosync.
