Device disconnects unexpectedly and stops functioning.
Hey all!! So I've been upgrading my PC for a while now and for a couple years have been using a build with Ryzen 9 7900x Rtx 3070 32gb ddr5 5200 mt/s (expo set to 6000) Asus x670 p wifi Evga 850w g2 Wd m.2 ssd as boot drive with 2 other ssds, one hdd and an external hdd About a month ago, i turned on expo, but the crashes only started happening maybe a week or 2 ago. What happens is, usually I'll be in a game, then quit and right after i quit (although the rest of the time it just happens whilst idle browsing) it'll freeze up. But not fully. My mouse still works, i can click on apps and they work, but if i hover over one, it doesn't give a background, it gives no indication im hovering over an icon. I cant search anything and right click menus linger and hang. When this happens if i click restart, it acts as though i restarted the windows file grabber and sets mt desktop to base, but then after that nothing works but the sleep command. Task manager works and shows gpu at 100% After a while of hanging, it will power off automatically. Event viewer shows nothing, i thought it was an issue with too much metadata staging failing, but after disabling that, it continues. I ran a defender offline scan with nothing, at least id didnt say ANYTHING not "no viruses" or "woah, viruses" Recently i tried cleaning on my disks, before this happened and im worried i may have inadvertently uninstalled system 32 files. Apart from the normal kernel power 42 or 142 error in event viewer, there have been error 1023 and 1008 with opening dll.sysmain. I tried running sfc /scannow and the disk image cleanup and repair, to no avail, althought the first scannow returned some corrupt files it repaired or claimed to. I'm at a serious loss, any help is super duper appreciated!
You might attempt to disable the expo mode just to confirm. Identify which component is consuming 100% GPU usage even when not in use, and observe the situation. Assess the condition of your drives, particularly the SSD with your operating system installed. Review the SMART table and tools like CrystalDiskInfo for details. If you need assistance interpreting the results, share screenshots of your drives' SMART table.
Nothing in task manager, but i can't really trust it, because it seems like its not updating, and when i open anything it doesn't seem to have updated. Like it kinda crashes twice and in the first crash i can open most things, but it doesnt update to be current. So im not sure the gpu is even at 100% or if its just glitching, im hoping it might just be nvidia recent drivers. I'll install crystaldisk and take a look when i get home, but the bios boot disk check said it was fine. I'll also update bios, since it appears asus has released an update on November 3rd, but i dont really think that could cause this, could it?
Here’s a rewritten version of your message:
This is intended to provide a response. Please let me know if you'd like it adjusted.
Your original text was clear, so I’ve kept the meaning intact while varying the phrasing.
The latest update was enabling the expo, so try turning it off first. The next step is to verify the health of the drives, paying close attention to the OS drive because sfc /scannow fixed some files. This might suggest a failing drive. Reviewing the SMART table can provide additional insights.
Exposed the hardware, here are the crystal disk outcomes for you—updated bios included. The first image shows the boot drive.
The drives appear fine, no red flags detected. After switching off expo and updating the BIOS, the PC functions normally.
It hasn't looked like it crashed yet, but I'm still unsure. I'll update this when it happens again or if it goes a week without an issue. Appreciate the help!
Unusually, the fastest fix was to log out and back in again. However, after doing so, a big black bar showed up at the top of my screen until I restarted the PC. It seems this might be related to a graphics driver problem, a Windows update, or I may have accidentally deleted a crucial DLL file.
