Device connections causing delays when multiple external SSDs are linked and data moves between them
My PC specifications include an i9 12900k with 32GB DDR5 RAM, an RTX 3070 graphics card, 850W PSU, an MSI Z690 Pro motherboard, internal storage (1TB SSD + 970GB NVMe SSD), and two external SSDs connected via USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. I’m working with scenarios where data moves between external drives or to internal storage while others remain idle. My copy speeds are roughly 450-500 MBPS, and everything resets smoothly once copying stops. When one drive is idle, no jitter appears. I also tested transferring data between two drives in a friend’s system with much weaker specs (i7 8th gen, 16GB RAM, basic case). Surprisingly, it worked flawlessly. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
What version of USB ports is everything connected to? There is a theoretical maximum bandwidth depending on which version of USB port it is. Your motherboard has several USB 2.0 ports on the back which have a theoretical bandwidth of 480 mbps. If we convert 480 mbps to MB/s, that's 60 MB/s, both your SSDs can write at higher speeds than this. After a quick search on google, it seems that both your external disks can write at 1050MB/s which is 8400 Mbps which means that you must use at least one USB 3.2 Gen 2 port for this. Have you tried plugging the hard drives into other USB ports? If you use a USB hub or similar, we have the reason for your experienced problems there, as I said, try other ports if possible and make sure it is a faster port. Another quick fix can be to update any drivers for all controllers etc if you haven't already done so.
I connected both devices to USB C Gen3.2 ports—one at the back of the motherboard and one in front of the case (Lianli Lancool 2). I experienced roughly 450-500mbps speeds, but during the transfer every other USB device would begin to jitter, affecting my audio interface. When I tried using the same drives on a friend’s PC with lower specs (i7 8th gen, 16GB RAM, cheap case), the copy ran smoothly.
