Device connection issues following a system crash.
Hello I ran into BSOD a couple of days ago and after that, none of my usb devices are not recognized. Usb ports still give out power so I am thinking that the drivers are failing. But now after i tried the mouse and keyboard on my Work computer, and the usb ports stopped working on that computer too im not so sure about anything anymore. Is this supposed to be a coincidence? I have tried reseting bios with battery removal and short circuiting the pins on the motherboard with no help. Now im stuck in screen where im supposed to run bios setup by pressing F1. How bad can the BSOD mess up my computer? Are the drivers failing, are the ports failing or did the BSOD mess up my devices to a state where they mess up every port they are attached to? Or is my mobo failing? Im not sure what are the possible scenarios are in a situation like this. Any ideas what might be the problem and how to solve the issue? My next step is to try PS2 keyboard / mouse and see what happens. Im running Windows 10 on a ASUS Z170-A. those might be the components that matter.
The issue seems to repeat even with identical hardware. It might be a problem with the USB port or a connection loss. Check if the power cable is disconnected during BIOS reset. If the mainboard retained power, the battery could be leaking or the pin contact might still be faulty.
I switched to a different keyboard first on my desktop and then tried it on my work computer, but neither worked. It seems strange since none of the USB ports functioned even when they were empty. As you mentioned, it’s making me feel like it was set up for BIOS setup.
It seems the controller is malfunctioning and isn’t responding to any connections. The best advice right now is to avoid using any USB devices you connected during the crash, since they could be damaged or responsible for the issue. Consider replacing them with a very inexpensive PS/2 keyboard and attempt to boot into BIOS using that one. If that succeeds, you can begin troubleshooting by reinstalling Windows from a DVD, ideally using a standard hard drive (not necessarily fast or large) and testing the USB ports with another cheap keyboard.
Usbs in my Work dock also fail when the laptop is connected. Device Manager shows error 10 for 'usb 3.0 blaa blaa' and after uninstalling it still reports error 10 for 'USB xHCI compliant host controller'. Updating or removing it doesn't fix the issue. IT support suggested a faulty mouse or keyboard might be the cause. You could try testing with another device, check for firmware updates, or consider replacing the controller if possible. If the problem persists, replacing the motherboard or controller may be necessary.
This seems to be a faulty controller. It’s quite likely. The USB port problem also appeared on another PC connected to it, making them the probable cause. Yes, fixing the mainboard will cost more than swapping it out, as it needs expert assistance. Given Asus mentions 5x protection, I’d reach out to their support to confirm if this falls within their warranty coverage.
