A few weeks ago my computer began experiencing occasional slowdowns or stutters. I first noticed this while playing CS:GO, even though I've played the game for several years on this machine before. The issue typically occurs every 2 to 10 seconds with a brief lag. It might have been linked to the latest Nvidia update to version 531.18, but after switching back to an older driver with the new Windows install, the problems continue. Initially, I suspected a mouse problem using a Logitech G305, but the same issue appeared with a Logitech MX Master 2S and a wired mouse from Asus. The stuttering also happens when using keyboards, though it's less obvious. In CS:GO, frame rates remain stuck at 400, and the stuttering extends to Windows as well, though it's less apparent there. I've tested various USB ports (front and back), unplugged everything except the monitor and mouse/keyboard, but nothing resolved it.

My system specs are: MSI MPG B550 Gaming, AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, Asus TUF GeForce RTX 3070, Corsair 2x 16GB RAM @ 2133 MHz. I updated the BIOS to the latest version in March 2023, but it didn't help. I also reinstalled Windows 11 without any changes. Temperatures for both CPU and GPU are normal, peaking below 70°C during stress tests. The CPU benchmark shows perfect performance, yet the mouse still lags heavily. It seems the issue could be related to the processor. A Blender CPU test revealed the mouse is the culprit. I'm not sure what else to try at this point; any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A video link was shared, but it may not be very useful due to compression and recording issues.

Have you considered refreshing your chipset drivers or mouse firmware? This wireless mouse uses a proprietary dongle or external Bluetooth adapter—have you verified the driver updates? Are you using Event Viewer to detect any stuttering issues with your peripherals? Also, are you connected via USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports? Have you tested both? Possibly a power-saving mode in certain USB ports could be the cause. Explore Device Manager for more details or refer to these discussions: [1] [2]

I just installed the latest chipset driver but nothing changed. After testing various mice—different dongles and wired setups—I’m not convinced it’s the mouse. For the G305 I used the included dongle. I’m unsure about using Event Viewer, so I’ll explore that further. I’ve checked both front and rear USB ports; the front uses USB3.0 while the rear uses USB 2.0. I’m starting to suspect the gaming monitor might be the issue. It’s an Asus VG278Q with a 144Hz refresh rate. I don’t notice stutters on my older 60Hz monitor (PB278QR), but maybe it’s just not visible because the lower refresh rate is too slow. I plan to get another VG278Q, as my girlfriend would benefit from a higher refresh rate display, and see if a new monitor resolves the problem.

I've connected my laptop to the same monitor using HDMI through the display port on my PC, and I'm using the same mouse (G305) with the same dongle. The laptop works fine, so the problem likely lies with the PC or the display port connection. I tried a different display port cable, which still had issues. I plan to reinstall Windows completely (last time I didn't repartition the drive) and clear out all previous drives from the PC. Hope this resolves the issue.

It seems the GPU is gradually failing. After switching Windows to a different drive and reinstalling it, the problem continued. Removing the 3070 and adding a P4000 worked—no drivers were installed, just the standard Windows driver—but the lag disappeared. Now I’m considering replacing it with a new GPU. The recent price drops are definitely a good sign.
