Device connected USB causing slow startup after turning on computer
Hi all, An issue has arisen that I sorted out a while back, so a brief history... Previously - on powering up the pc it would get to the black screen with the blue Windows logo and a white rotating circle/dots. It would 'hang' on this until an external usb drive finished its initialisation , taking roughly 10-15 seconds. I can hear the drive doing its stuff and immediately after its final chug-chug-brr-brr the desktop appears This delay wouldn't happen if I subsequently restart the pc as the drive has powered up and done what it needs to do. Solved this issue by disabling "USB Legacy Support" in the BIOS. Fast forward - the same issue has returned. Nothing changed in BIOS, CSM Support also disabled as a suggestion. It reappeared right after the latest Windows 11 upgrade to 25H2, but what could/would it have altered? Open to suggestions please.
I ask why you always need this USB every time you turn on, since you could just take it out and put it back once the computer starts. Also, do you really need it constantly connected? The reason is that Windows and the BIOS verify the USB before use, making sure it’s safe and free of threats. I’d consider swapping the boot sequence in the BIOS so your C: drive comes first.
The PC and external drive are hidden beneath my desk, requiring a bit of digging to access unless you go under there. It should be present frequently for my Plex storage setup. I’m almost certain the BIOS is configured to recognize only the C: drive, excluding USB devices.
