Remove CMOS, then follow your guide. Also check the BIOS battery and regular battery, restart it normally. This usually resolves the issue.

Because it's a laptop, I'd need to take it apart to remove the battery, but I could attempt a power cycle instead.

Removing the BIOS battery helps clear the CMOS on laptops. Resetting with normal power cycles usually doesn’t achieve the same result.
