I plan to upgrade my PC for gaming and intend to replace my CPU, though I’m not entirely certain. My current graphics card is an R9 280, and my processor is an Athlon X4 760k quad-core. I’ve already selected a new CPU and motherboard, but I'm still considering my options. I believe my GPU is more powerful than my CPU and therefore should be upgraded first, with a target of achieving stable framerates at medium or low settings.

How is your current performance level? Are you tracking CPU/GPU/RAM usage while playing games? What are your specific goals, such as reducing frame drops? I anticipate additional performance is possible with a 280 card, potentially through a more powerful CPU. However, an X4 760 and 280 combination is generally a solid pairing. Which components are you using?

If you desire a stable frame rate and are willing to accept lower settings, upgrading the CPU is definitely recommended.

Discard that CPU without hesitation. Consider removing the GPU as well, purely for its own sake. Explore purchasing a used RX 480 on eBay or similar platforms. While you don’t intend to play games at ultra settings, if your budget allows for improved components, avoid unnecessary frugality.

I plan to purchase a Ryzen 5 2600 and B450m DS3h motherboard. My goal is to achieve improved frame rates and greater stability, as my current system experiences frequent performance fluctuations. I recently tested PUBG, which performed sluggishly with the CPU reaching 90% utilization while the GPU remained at 60%.

I anticipate needing to delay due to the requirement of acquiring a new motherboard and RAM.

The 2600 and platform upgrade represent a worthwhile investment.
