I don't pretend to see clearly about spending on expensive ships.
It's all about the business side. If there are people ready to spend, you should seize it. Ultimately, he's playing the game for profit.
To avoid flooding, $40 grants you a full-sized single-player game plus an MMOSS. Imagine if they offered the hornet, m50, and cutlass for the same cost as the Aurora. Once you buy the base game upon release, going online leaves you facing overwhelming encounters with hornets, m50, and cutlasses—expect a lot of trouble.
I've invested roughly 200 credits into this game—Avenger and Hornet. I'm thinking about getting another ship, but I'm not sure yet. They let you sell ships as much as you want. It's Pay 2 Win in the way it works; you can actually purchase the top-tier ships. But will that matter? I can load my Hornet with every weapon available, but if I fly recklessly and get hit by the M50 while dodging, it doesn't help much.
It comes down to the abilities, but that raises more questions. Are the top ships the most powerful? The largest one? In reality, there’s no single "best" ship given how varied the gameplay options are. I’m pretty sure an Idris or Bengal wouldn’t outperform a Carrack in exploration, but then a Carrack wouldn’t be the best explorer either. You can’t just match every weapon to a hornet—there are limits on what each class can handle. It’d be cool to imagine a Hornet equipped with a railgun from an Idris!
