it doesn't matter whether you're checking the system post so you don't have to deal with everything inside the case, you can actually run a post test without using a mouse or keyboard at all x) but it will indicate a keyboard isn't connected likely

I noticed some hardware that fails to start if it doesn’t recognize a KB&M. If it doesn’t boot, it’s wise to connect them just in case.
